Window tinting and film for homes and commercial buildings have come a long way. The uses have changed significantly too with big increases in the number of installs for residential homes.

Have you ever been in a home where the carpet, furniture or flooring was faded due to sun exposure?  We’ve seen this quite often particularly in homes with large windows facing the sun’s path.  These rays not only damage items in your home they also unnecessarily heat up the house during the Summer months.

A home has always been considered the safest place for a family.  This will likely remain but steps can be made to make it even safer with window tint and film.

There are several companies that offer home window film services from Solar-tex to Sunblock Window Film.  There are also several brands of film and adhesive with the most recognizable name being 3M but there are other quality brands that offer a different approach for your specific needs.

It’s not all about blocking damaging rays:

The most notable use for home window tint and film is to block dangerous rays from the sun.  Obviously this helps year-round.  The sun is more intense in the Summer but the glare from the sun hitting the snow can be blinding in the Winter months so the value is definitely good for all seasons.

When we started looking for window film for our home our original effort was to block the sun’s rays but it turns out our favorite use was for privacy.  Most people don’t know this but many films kind of act like 1 way glass from a distance.  This means from inside your home you can see out but people from the street can’t see in.  This is nice for privacy and also for safety.  It’s quite a deterrent for thieves who have no idea if someone is in the house or not.  They’ll likely search for easier targets.

While we’re talking about thieves we’ll mention the benefit of having film on your windows in the event the glass is broken.  Window film helps to maintain the integrity of the glass, keeping it together and making it more difficult to break through.  Whether it’s an errant baseball or someone with bad intentions, it’s not easy to break.

There are great reasons to have window film installed in your home, these were just a few.  As we mentioned before there are several companies offering home window tinting and film.  Two of the primary companies in Columbus are Solartex and Sunblock Window Film.

Here’s what you need to know when making your decision on a company:

-Check on the warranty.  What happens if the film bubbles or cracks?  Will they replace it?  Does the warranty transfer to a new owner and for how long?

-Ask for references.  Any good company should be able to quickly give you 3 recent references.  Be sure to call the references and ask lots of questions.

-Ask specifically who will be installing the window film.  This is a big deal that most people forget when they pay for services.  You might be signing up with the biggest company on the block but that doesn’t mean that the person installing at your home is qualified or experienced.

-Price isn’t always the most important and this can go either way.  Just because a price was lower doesn’t mean you won’t get great service.  A high price won’t guarantee great service either.  Get access to the decision maker in the company and see if they have a true interest in making you a happy customer.

All of this takes a bit of time but in the end you’ll be happy with your window film.
